BOWLING GREEN PLANS
SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is instituting an annual Spring Music Festival beginning in April 2002. Each year the festival will be devoted to the works of a single composer who has made significant contributions to church music.

Through a series of lectures, concerts, and recitals, numerous works will be presented and discussed across the weeklong event.

Beginning April 14 and running through April 20, the Spring Music Festival 2002 will feature the life and works of the English master, Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The festival will open with a Vaughan Williams hymn festival on Sunday afternoon, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. Five choirs, brass ensemble and organ will gather to sing the great hymns of Vaughan Williams in a program following the liturgical year. Four organists will also perform preludes based on hymn tunes.

Tuesday evening, April 16, will feature a parlor musicale of vocal and piano compositions featuring mezzosoprano Paula McMahan and tenor James H. Arnn II, as well as pianists Frances Hall and Shirley Karrick. The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday evening, April 17, Vaughan Williams specialist Dr. Rene Clark will present a lecture on the life and works of the composer. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by Dr. Clark's lecture.

Thursday evening, April 18, will see another 7:30 p.m. parlor recital. Vaughan Williams' arrangements of folk songs will be performed by numerous soloists.

The festival will close on Saturday evening, April 20, with a dinner theater performance of scenes from Vaughan Williams' opera SIR JOHN IN LOVE. A 5:30 p.m. lecture will be presented on Shakespeare's MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR . Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance. The festival is presented under the direction of David Paul Gibson, Director of Music.
