BOWLING GREEN PLANS
SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky,
is instituting an annual Spring Music Festival beginning in April
2002. Each year the festival will be devoted to the works of a
single composer who has made significant contributions to church
music.
Through a series of lectures, concerts, and
recitals, numerous works will be presented and discussed across
the weeklong event.
Beginning April 14 and running through April
20, the Spring Music Festival 2002 will feature the life and works
of the English master, Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The festival will open with a Vaughan Williams
hymn festival on Sunday afternoon, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. Five
choirs, brass ensemble and organ will gather to sing the great
hymns of Vaughan Williams in a program following the liturgical
year. Four organists will also perform preludes based on hymn tunes.
Tuesday evening, April 16, will feature a parlor
musicale of vocal and piano compositions featuring mezzosoprano
Paula McMahan and tenor James H. Arnn II, as well as pianists Frances
Hall and Shirley Karrick. The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m.
On Wednesday evening, April 17, Vaughan Williams
specialist Dr. Rene Clark will present a lecture on the life and
works of the composer. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed
by Dr. Clark's lecture.
Thursday evening, April 18, will see another
7:30 p.m. parlor recital. Vaughan Williams' arrangements of folk
songs will be performed by numerous soloists.
The festival will close on Saturday evening,
April 20, with a dinner theater performance of scenes from Vaughan
Williams' opera SIR JOHN IN LOVE. A 5:30 p.m. lecture will be presented
on Shakespeare's MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR . Dinner will begin at
6:30 p.m., followed by the performance. The festival is presented
under the direction of David Paul Gibson, Director of Music.
