The first annual Church Appreciation Day at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, is scheduled for Friday, April 26, 2002. For information, contact Lance Ragsdale at 601/968-8886.

Rhodes College in Memphis will welcome the Rev. Martin Marty for the spring Gilliland lecture on April 17 at 8:00p.m. His address will deal with religious diversity in America. Martin Marty is the author of over 50 books, including, "The One and the Many: America's Seach for the Common Good."

Construction projects of Tusculum College are making good progress both on the Greeneville campus and in Knoxville's Centerpoint Park. The four apartment-style residence halls being built on the Greeneville campus are ahead of schedule and expected to be finished early in June. They will be occupied in the fall term. In Knoxville, construction is on schedule at the new Knoxville Centre for Professional Studies, which will provide a modern, spacious structure for Tusculum classes for working adult students. This building is expected to be finished by the last week in July.

In 1999, Ruby Tuesday, Inc. donated $50,000 to Maryville College to create a Landscaping and Campus Improvement Plan. With campus-wide input, a comprehensive plan was created that would support the infrastructure needs of the college while augmenting the unique beauty and atmosphere of the grounds and facilities. In April of 2000 the Board of Directors authorized the raising of funds necessary to complete the $3 million campus beautification and improvement plan. RTI has provided a lead gift of $375,000 and other donors have already funded selected portions of the comprehensive plan.

Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary will offer an all-day workshop on April 13, 2002, that will give perspectives for dealing with conflict in congregations. To be held at Gardencourt, on the seminary's campus, the event will run from 8:30a.m. to 4p.m Dr. Hugh Halverstadt, professor of ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, will facilitate the workshop. He is widely known for his work in the area of conflict management. The event is funded by the George and Jean Edwards Lecture endowment.

Columbia Theological Seminary's annual Colloquium highlights ministry with youth and young adults, April 22-24, with a focus on involving clergy and laypersons in conversation about the critical challenge of this ministry in the 21st century. "Life in the Liquid Church" will include worship, workshops, lectures and fellowship. On Tuesday evening, the choir of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta will present special music at Decatur Presbyterian Church.

Montreat Conference Center offers an opportunity for college-age adults to explore community and spirituality with their peers during the annual Collegiate Conference, May 23-26.

The Centre College football team was honored at its annual banquet. The Colonels posted a 9-1 record in 2001, finishing second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The nine victories are the most by a Colonel team since the 1921 record of ten. The staff of the Centre College newspaper, The Cento, has exceeded itself. After winning 15 awards last year, the staff captured 19 awards at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association competition in Lexington.

Pikeville College hosted a reading on February 20 by author Linda Scott DeRosier, who returned to her alma mater in January as writer-in-residence. The reading was from her new book, Songs of Life and Grace.

 

MSARC/MSAPCE Event Planned

The MSARC/MSAPCE Regional Event this year is November 4-6, 2002, at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville. Theme is: "Outside the Box: A Creative Encounter of Worship and Education."

Keynoter/Facilitator is the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth (Lib) Caldwell, professor of pastoral theology at McCormick Seminary in Chicago.

You are invited to bring a team of persons involved in education and in worship to take part in a creative exploration of worship and education. DCE's, Christian Education committee members, worship committee members, pastors, youth leaders, resource center directors are all encouraged to attend. Brochures will be available in August.

 

Ninth Irish Summer Institute is
August 19 – September 1, 2002

"Northern Ireland: The Dynamics of Peace Building and Reconciliation" will be the focus for a group of Presbyterians and Catholics traveling to Northern Ireland from America in August to take part in the 2002 Irish Summer Institute.

This study group will meet with religious, political, and community leaders in Northern Ireland in a series of informal discussions and tours. By fostering an understanding of the Irish situation, it is the design of The Institute to explore means of encouraging peacemaking within a Christian context. The group will travel to Dublin, Belfast, Ballycastle, Derry and Armagh.

Marj Carpenter, who has traveled all over the world to pursue mission interests for the church, said: "The Irish Summer Institute is one of the best planned overseas trips that I have ever experienced."
