Buckhorn Celebrates Century Mark

A celebration happened at the Buckhorn Children’s Center on June 2, 2002, the 100th anniversary of the work started by Presbyterian pastor Harvey Murdoch in 1902. It appears that this work will go on for at least another hundred years, propelled by the love and dedication of the people who are now involved in this mission to children and their families.

Where is Buckhorn? It is not just in a remote mountain village in eastern Kentucky. Bob Undercuffler, preacher for the celebration said: “Buckhorn is in the hearts of all the people who give and pray for these children. It is wherever people say love, and where God is at work for good.”

Would all of the good things about Buckhorn happen if headquarters were somewhere else, in a city like Lexington or Louisville? Charles Baker, President and CEO of the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency/Buckhorn Children’s Foundation, said he thinks the location of headquarters in Buckhorn, Kentucky, makes a difference, by basing the operation in a loving, supporting small community.

The celebration continues, as Presbyterians “Answer God’s call to seek out suffering children and families and improve their lives.”

Bob Undercuffler & Nancy Fontenot

Bob Undercuffler, at left, was pastor of Buckhorn Presbyterian Church in the sixties and is now chief development officer for the Buckhorn Children’s Foundation. He preached on June 2. Nancy Fontenot, an elder at Highland Presbyterian Church in Louisville, was the bagpiper who led the procession into the church, and is a member of the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency board.

John and Edith Bare from Cox’s Creek, Kentucky, were at Buckhorn on June 2 for the inauguration of The Harvey S. Murdoch Society, which recognizes those who provide for the mission of Buckhorn as part of a current will or estate plan.

A barbecue dinner on the grounds of the Buckhorn campus followed the worship service.
