The Community Technology Center at Pikeville College has made available through virtual field trips a number of adventures such as a tour of a tropical rain forest, an underwater journey to study manatees or a visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Students are able to see, hear and talk simultaneously with a facilitator at a remote site using a monitor, a camera, and wireless microphones. At Pikeville College’s center, field trips can be viewed on a large rear-projection television screen and are supplemented by surround sound. Students from Pikeville (Kentucky) City Schools and St. Francis Catholic School recently took a virtual field trip to the Louisville Science Center in Louisville, sponsored by the Center for Rural Development in Somerset. More than 200 students participated in the interactive classroom experience, which included a question and answer session on the physical and mental training astronauts receive.
