Lives Illuminated in SmoketownChildren at the Presbyterian Child Development Center in Louisville will have a safe place to play and bright classrooms in which to learn, thanks to 125 volunteers from General Electric, Presbyterian churches in Louisville and Smoketown residents. The two-Saturday event on June 15 and June 22, was funded by the General Electric Commodity Club and Elfun. When GE volunteers serving Kids Café at the new Presbyterian Community Center asked to see its child development center, currently housed in a building that dates to 1913, they were dismayed to find it looking more than a little shabby. The moment was catalytic, generating immediate action. GE selected the Center as a volunteer project and quickly mobilized their resources to “Bring Good Things to Life in Smoketown.” The rejuvenation project will allow the Center to continue childcare services while efforts to fund and build a new facility move forward. The Presbyterian Community Center successfully completed a $3.2 million community center in July 2001. Phase II of its capital campaign will place a new Presbyterian Child Development Center on the land adjacent to the community center site.
