The Open Church Door
by Dee Wade
The
open church door
stands painfully exposed,
a breach, a broken seal
just asking for trouble
— The Sexton should be fired —
Flies could get in
or worse.
The church door, open,
advertises welcome,
exhales good news to all,
seeking students of grace
— Three cheers for the Sexton —
Fresh wind
disturbs stale dust.
The open door church
risks ruin and renewal,
suffers insult, finds honor
in giving itself away
because over its communion table
Is suspended
a cross.
