Storytellers Have Stories . . . Will Travel!
DONNA MARIE TODD“I grew up listening to the oldtimers tell stories at gatherings in the hills.” A native of the Appalachian mountains in West Virginia, Donna Marie has always been attracted to interesting character roles in theater. An award winning actress, she has earned critical acclaim for her portrayals in Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, the wicked stepmother in Cinderella and The Mikado’s Yum Yum.
Her interest in great women of the Bible has resulted in a repertoire that includes Mary the mother of Jesus, Lydia and many other figures from both Old and New Testaments. She portrayed Mary Magdalene for Montreat’s Chapel of the Prodigal. Donna Marie is available for workshops, Vacation Bible Schools, sermons and other performances. Donna Marie is a member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers & the National Storytelling Network. According to Bill, “When we learn how to tell the stories about the bad things that have happened in our lives, our stories help to heal us. When we look around in the landscape of our own personal stories and listen to the voices speaking to us there, we often discover the hidden and amazing ways that God is working in our lives. And our stories of faith keep alive those people who have enriched us.” Bill has seen people experience the power that storytelling possesses. “Our stories ground us in the world. They help us see where we’ve come from and that, of course, is essential to our finding our way through the present darkness and confusion.”
“None of this is easy or automatic,” says Bill. “We live in a world that keeps us so distracted there is little time for remembering and reflecting. Television wants to become our cultural storyteller, but the stories it tells are often not our true stories. Even our congregations can get so distracted by “issues” and problems and they lose track of their true identity and mission.” Bill’s passion for storytelling is one he loves to share.
