CHRISTMAS COMES AGAIN WITH PROJECT JOY
Bill Higgins, at left, elder at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church in Nashville, was the organizer again this year for Project Joy, which is in its fourth year. This partnership between Priest Lake and First Presbyterian Church of Harlan, Kentucky, brings joy to givers and receivers alike during the Christmas season.
On the first weekend in November, two big trucks loaded with gifts from churches in Middle Tennessee Presbytery, arrived in Harlan, with a hundred wrapped gift boxes, two hundred food boxes and warm clothing. The gifts were distributed to 300 people who responded to the local organizing and publicity efforts of the deacons at First Church of Harlan. Again this year, representatives of Presbyterian Appalachian Broadcasting Council were there to record interviews with people in Harlan, who are suffering from the effects of very high unemployment rates in this one-industry Appalachian county.
