ACTIVITY AROUND SYNOD SHOWS UP IN
VARIETY OF REPORTS AT ANNUAL MEETING

Moderator and Stated Clerk

New Synod Moderator for 2003 (at left) is Elder Nolan Waller from First Presbyterian Church in Oxford, Mississippi. He is congratulated on his election by Synod Stated Clerk Richard Baldwin. Mr. Waller, a commissioner to Synod from St. Andrew Presbytery, presided over a meeting that featured reports from committees and agencies and institutions of the Synod. “These are exciting things going on that the Synod is a part of,” he said. “They make our budget come alive.”

“Lean times are coming,” said Synod Executive and Treasurer David Snellgrove. “In light of the national economy and the fall of the stock market and reduced giving, the Synod budget had to be reduced by $80,000 in 2003 and additional cuts are predicted in 2004.”

Elder Mamie Jones, who has served the Synod as Moderator and Executive Committee Chair, gave the report of the Executive Committee to Synod. She is an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

Liz Trexler and Jud Hendrix, co-pastors of Covenant Community Church in Louisville, reported on their use of a Mission Program Grant from the Synod in developing an exciting new ministry. Other equally exciting reports came from grant recipients at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Louisville and Christiana Presbyterian Church in Middle Tennessee.

Christy Wolf-Mazeres, director and producer for Presbyterian Appalachian Broadcasting Council, reported that three million people are reached with every spot they produce.

Mary Newbern-Williams, associate executive of Sheppards and Lapsley Presbytery and new chair of Synod’s Committee on Representation, promised that equal representation for all will be a reality in this Synod.
