PARTNERS IN MINISTRY:
PRESBYTERY OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE
& HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Presentation of Keys
Imagine, if you will, that you and your spouse are
in your late 60’s and early 70’s, surviving on a very small
income, and living in a house that has no heat or running water. Each
morning, chopping wood for the wood stove and going to collect your water
for the day is a part of your regular routine. While that scenario was
a daily reminder of the poverty in which they lived, it is now only a
faint memory for an elderly Wilson County, TN couple, as on Sunday, November
24th they received the keys to their new home built by Presbyterians in
Middle Tennessee, in cooperation with Wilson County Habitat for Humanity.
This mission project was sponsored by the Community
Ministries Task Force of the presbytery’s Outreach Mission Unit
and was coordinated by Tom Lovell, Pastor of Bellevue Presbyterian Church.
The project was endorsed by the Presbytery in October of 2001, and involved
the participation of twenty churches plus students from the Vanderbilt
Presbyterian Campus Ministry, who provided builders, lunch for those who
worked, and gifts of building materials and supplies. Of the $42,000 required
to build this home, Middle Tennessee Presbyterians also provided $23,077
in financial support.
“Those who participated in this project were
doubly blessed,” said one participant. “Not only were we able
to share the gospel in a tangible way by building a home for this family,
we also had the opportunity to work with and get to know other Presbyterians
from across our Presbytery, who are also committed to helping our church
serve as an ‘exhibition of the kingdom of God,’ to our community.”
