Retirement Condominiums Expanded

Spring, 2003 will find 13 new condominiums on the campus of St. Andrews Retirement Community in Richmond, Kentucky. The challenge, the dream, the plans for St. Andrews began in 1985 and today the hillside off Tates Creek Road is the setting for the 61 condominiums; McCready Manor which is an apartment complex of 73 units for independent and assisted living, and Telford Terrace, a licensed care facility.

“It is somewhat presumptuous to speak of beginnings, especially in faith matters. And St. Andrews is first and foremost a faith matter.” These are the words of Dr. William R. Young, who was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at the time of the conception of a retirement community. There would be no St. Andrews, certainly, Dr. Young points out, had it not been for the Bennett family becoming part of First Presbyterian Church many, many years ago. For it was Stephen F. McCready, an Episcopalian from Winchester who in his will made a bequest “To First Presbyterian Church at Richmond, Kentucky, in memory of my beloved wife, Isabel Bennett McCready, to be used to found or enlarge or endow a nursing and retirement home.”

Today the large cross at the entrance to St. Andrews tells of the united effort of First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church along with First Presbyterian to establish the nonprofit facilities for the retired at affordable prices.

Today all of the condominiums are being enjoyed and there is a waiting list for them. The one and two bedroom apartments in McCready Manor are always in demand. All residents gather for at least one meal a day in the spacious dining room. An excellent nursing staff oversees residents at Telford Terrace which has 32 personal care beds and 8 nursing-home beds.

Telford Terrace is named in honor of Robert L. Telford Jr.  Stocker Drive, the main drive through the campus, was named in honor of Bill and Alice Stocker who through their generosity made more than 30 acres available for the facility.

Inquiries about St. Andrews may be made by contacting Board Chairman Ron Coffman, Administrator Gil Shew, or Nursing Director Leila Grant at (859) 623-1400, e-mail McCreadystan@iclub.org, or by writing to St. Andrews, 300 Stocker Drive, Richmond, KY 40475.
