Synod Welcomes Delegation from Mexico

Responding to a visit in October by a delegation from the Synod of Living Waters, the Synod of the Peninsula of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico sent three of its officers to our Synod’s annual meeting in Huntsville, Ala.

The Rev. Edwin Tun Canto, president; the Rev. Amos Cahuich Yam, secretary, and Elder Agur Mendicuti Perez, treasurer, were present for the entire meeting of the Synod. Afterward, they visited the Clean Water U campus near Oxford, Miss., the Synod office in Franklin, Tenn., and the Presbyterian Center and other sites in Louisville, Ky.

As had been done at the Synod of the Peninsula meeting in Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, Tun and the Rev. Terry Newland, our Synod executive, signed a covenant agreement certifying the sister relationship between the two synods.

With this covenant we hereby do acknowledge that we are bound and called together as partners in Christ’s service, the document stated. It cites three particular areas of cooperation:

Promoting water purification systems of Living Waters for the World within the Yucatan Peninsula, naming Elder Joanie Lukins of Danville, Ky., as U.S. coordinator of that work.

Developing an exchange program to help people in each synod understand the life and culture of the other.

Promoting interchange of information between the two synods, including use of the Presbyterian Voice.

Rev. Tun delivered, in Spanish, the prayer for the installation of Rev. Newland as Synod executive. Later, Rev. Cahuich, speaking in English, expressed appreciation to the Synod for its hospitality.
