National Tour of Children's Artwork
Illustrates Imaginative Views of Faith
Children often approach God and faith with an imaginative
sense of discovery and openness. And when asked to illustrate Bible
stories, they can present the world with creative and inspiring work.
An exhibit of faith-based children's artwork, part
of a national tour sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was
at First Presbyterian Church in Cookeville, TN through March 25.
The local exhibit, called "Whoever welcomes this child
... welcomes me" is one of five touring Presbyterian churches throughout
the country during a two-year tour of children's artwork. A large exhibit
of 45 pieces and four smaller collections of 25 pieces each are traveling
to different sites as part of the denomination's yearlong celebration
of children, "The Year of the Child."
A call for children's artwork for use in the denomination's
campaign brought more than 1,800 pencil sketches, crayon drawings, watercolors
and mixed-media pieces from children between 5 and 18. The 11" x 17"
entries feature written commentary and creative, visual interpretations
of Biblical passages or spiritual insights.
The exhibit is supplemented by "Portraits of Jesus"
created by a children's Sunday School Class.
