For Jane Hines, Upon Retiring

Things I Have Come to Love About Jane Hines
By Betty Meadows

Yes, Jane has been the editor of the Voice for 25 years and she is a terrific bridge player. But did you know that she loves Kentucky wildlife, both plant and animal? One time while attending the forum, the meeting with the presbytery executives in the Synod, Jane and I went to an exhibit where I discovered that she loved the plants that grow profusely throughout this state. In the bookstore, Jane bought a few coloring books that had pictures of the plant life. She loved the delicate drawings, each appropriately named. Later I sent her crayons and colored pencils, simply to mark the day!

On another occasion she told me about the baby fawn that had been born in her front yard. As Jane came and went from her house, the fawn stayed safely tucked under a tree. Then one day, Jane came home to discover the mother had moved the fawn to the flowerbed next to the house. When it had grown strong, both mother and fawn scampered away.

Jane is retiring but even so, we will continue to play bridge, attend art exhibits, and find ways to be in awe of the beauty in the state of Kentucky.
