Synod Presbyterian Women Report on
Mission At June 5 and 6 Gathering

Presbyterian Women gathered from around the Synod in Franklin, Tennessee June 5 and 6. During their gathering, the women heard from their two representatives who went on the Global Exchange, which takes place every three years. This is a PC(USA) sponsored exchange that sends representatives from each of the sixteen synods overseas. The 2005 exchange was with Brazil. The representatives from the Synod of Living Waters were Barbara Snyder of Transylvania Presbytery, Loretta Bradley of the Presbytery of East Tennessee and Bligh Jones of South Alabama Presbytery. Traveling in October, the group went to Washington, DC for a few days of study and training before departing on their journey to Brazil. Once in Brazil, they traveled to different cities, learning about church sponsored organizations that are working to overcome the tremendous poverty in the country. While Brazil has the ninth largest economy in the world, there is much poverty amongst the general population with 40 million people living on the equivalent of 50 US dollars per month. The exchange will be complete at this July’s Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women when women from Brazil visit the United States.

Upcoming projects of the Synod PW include racial/ethnic dialogue gatherings around the Synod. This project is funded by a grant from the Churchwide Coordinating Team. These dialogues will take place in Memphis in 2006, Birmingham in 2007, and in Mid-Kentucky in 2008. Bonnie Blair of the Presbytery of the Mid-South is coordinating the effort.
