Campus Ministries At Pikeville College

Transylvania Presbytery

The Campus Ministries Office (CMO) is a busy and active part of Pikeville College. The campus has four active religious groups: Blessed Unity of God (BUG), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Christian Medical Association (CMA), and Baptist Christian Ministries (BCM). Sandy Mitchell, the Campus Minister, coordinates the religious aspects of the campus. The Mission Statement for campus ministries states, "The CMO strives to embrace the students, faculty, and staff by providing creative and constructive outreach programs while communicating an open and caring environment where they may strengthen and grow spiritually." Sandy believes that through the help of the Church and the College Spiritual Life Committee, the mission statement is being fulfilled. Sandy has regular office hours, chairs the Spiritual Life Committee, serves on the Pikeville Ministerial Association, and is an Elder at Pikeville First Presbyterian Church. She is involved with the religious organizations on the campus and with the Transylvania Campus Ministers and oversees the operation of the Campus Ministries Office.

To kick off the fall, Pikeville First Presbyterian Church hosted a special service and lunch for the Pikeville College athletes, students, staff, and families. The CMA held a retreat, and Sandy delivered the morning worship Pastors" was hosted by the CMO, and pastors from all denominations provided information about their local churches for the College students. In November, Pikeville College celebrates Religious Emphasis Week. This year the theme was "Worship On The Hill." A praise and worship service was directed by Jennifer Hughes and the Pikeville College Concert Choir and community choirs. "Book Talk" The DaVinci Code was led by Mrs. Linda Childers and Dr. Kossuth Mitchell, two Elders from the Pikeville First Presbyterian Church. Dr. James Browning, Assistant Professor of Religion, presented a special chapel service. Chapel services are held every Tuesday. Speakers from the faculty, staff, and community deliver the messages. BUG and the CMA led the worship service with music, drama, and testimonies at the First Presbyterian church for this years spring revival.

Pikeville College, the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville, and the Transylvania Presbytery are major supporters of Campus Ministry at the College. Sandy notes that many events are taking place on the campus and the ministry has grown considerably in the past two years. "We are as excited about the things that are going on in Campus Ministries at Pikeville College. These are only a few of the activities that are taking place on 'the hill.' Thank you for allowing me to be part of this wonderful ministry."
