Preaching
as Testimony Anna Carter Florence's much anticipated book, Preaching as Testimony, arrived in bookstores in January. The book explores the theoretical, historical and practical elements of preaching as testimony. ![]() Carter Florence begins by offering profiles of three historic women, Anne Hutchinson, Sarah Osborn, and Jarena Lee. Despite societal mores, they preach and teach through “testimony”, telling of their experiences of faith. The book continues with an examination of the work of Paul Ricoeur, Walter Brueggemann, Rebecca Chopp, and Mary McClintock Fulkerson. As she analyzes the theories of testimony put forth by these four, Carter Florence explores the theological and biblical perspectives on the topic. Finally, she offers exercises, advice and guidelines on claiming the gifts of testimony for preaching today. Written for preachers, this book is beautifully crafted and enjoyable to read. Grounded by rich theology, a deep regard for scripture and a wondering awe at the lengths that those shut out from calling will go to fulfill it, this is a work with a wealth of inspiration. It may be written with preachers in mind, but it is inspiring to all who seek to live faithfully, day by day. |
