Summer English Program
at King College Successful

King College hosted 76 teens from Brazil and Korea during the month of July for the first annual Summer English Program. The students worked during the intensive four-week program to improve their use and comprehension of the English language.

Students ranged in age from eighth grade to seniors in high school. Some parents of the students also came to improve their English skills. Students were given a test on the first day of their arrival, to determine in which of the five levels of proficiency they would best fit.

The faculty of the program focused their curriculum in four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Each day, the students would follow a schedule of five hours of classes, two hours of athletics, and an evening activity, which usually took place off campus. On the weekends, there were optional trips to locations such as Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Pigeon Forge.

At the end of the program, the students were tested for proficiency again. Every student improved upon his or her original scores. "Every student had good results," said Dr. Elias Dantas, Associate Director of the Peeke School of Christian Mission and Director of the Summer English program. The students rated the program and were asked to give scores on areas such as transportation, food, faculty, and activities. According to these results, the program was an overwhelming success.
