McLellan Retires From GermantownB. Denton McLellan Jr. has retired after 28 years as senior pastor of Germantown Presbyterian church in Memphis. McLellan answered the call to become pastor of Germantown in December 1973. His last Sunday was October 28, 2001. "Denton McLellan has grown this church in numbers but also in spirit," said Jim Carson, an elder at Germantown Presbyterian. Under McLellan's leadership, the 163-year-old church has grown from 425 members to its current size of about 1,000 active members. Opportunities for worship, education and mission have likewise expanded during McLellan's years. One of the most recent examples is a sister relationship forged between Germantown Presbyterian and a Russian Evangelical Baptist Church in Siberia. "Denton is easy to talk to about the bible and church doctrine. He always listens to others' thoughts with a serious, open mind. He helps people think about issues with a new perspective," said Tom Tweel, active in the church for 18 years. "We will miss his spiritual leadership, his strong reminders of social justice and his wonderful sense of humor."
