William Winter Honored TwiceThe new Archives and History Building, now under construction in Jackson, Mississippi, has been named in honor of former Mississippi Governor William F. Winter, an elder at Fondren Presbyterian Church in Jackson. Another prestigious honor for the former governor (1980-84) has also been announced. He received the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award given by the National Education Association in July ceremonies in Los Angeles. The award cited Winter's role in the passage of the Education Reform Act of 1982, the nation's first comprehensive education reform act, which established public kindergartens for all Mississippi children. The King award is presented to leaders who have persevered in applying a nonviolent philosophy and techniques made popular by King in the Civil Rights Movement.
