Al Freundt Passes
into the Church Triumphant Nov. 5

Funeral services for the Rev. Albert H. Freundt, Jr., were held in the chapel on the campus of Reformed Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 7, 2001.

A familiar face and a trusted voice of authority on church matters will be missing when the Synod meets in January. Until he was no longer able to serve as Synod Stated Clerk when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year, Al Freundt was always present at Synod meetings and his presence was meaningful. Synod executive David Snellgrove said, "Al's churchmanship, his friendship and his delightful sense of humor will be greatly missed."

When the Synod met in September of this year, this resolution was adopted:

WHEREAS Albert H. Freundt, Jr., has faithfully served the Synod of Living Waters and its predecessor Synod of the Mid-South as Stated Clerk; and WHEREAS he has provided guidance and expert opinion in judicial and ecclesiastical matters; and

WHEREAS he is a beloved colleague and friend to all the commissioners, resource persons and staff persons serving with him in the Synod;

THEREFORE be it resolved by the Synod of Living Waters on this day, September 24, 2001: That our sincere gratitude and affection be expressed in this resolution, and that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Synod of Living Waters and forwarded to Albert H. Freundt, Jr.

In addition to being a pastor, a teacher, a scholar and an author, Al had served the General Assembly, and the Presbytery of Mississippi as well as the Synod on numerous committees and task forces. His contributions to the life of the denomination have been wide ranging and will be reflected in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for decades to come.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Al graduated from King College, Columbia Theological Seminary and received a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary. He is survived by his wife, Alene, sons Albert III (Chip) and James C. (Calvin) Freundt, and four grandchildren.

On behalf of the Synod of Living Waters, Emett Barfield, at left, presents a framed copy of the Synod Resolution honoring Al Freundt to Dr. Freundt's son, Chip, at the Freundt home in Brandon, Mississippi.
